During July and August 2021 I took part in a writing workshop organised by local best-selling author Leigh Russell (leighrussell.co.uk).

Each week we were given optional homework.

Here’s the shortest short story I’ve written, so far.

LOST AND FOUND

“Loads-a money” blared Ben, waving a stuffed wallet.

I handed Eric some pound coins, waved away the change, and opened my ‘Big Issue’ magazine.

“Thanks” said Eric. “He’s my brother” he added, nodding towards Ben still carelessly waggling his wad.

“Really?” I said, raising an eyebrow, Roger Moore-style.

“Waiting for him to say ‘Hello’” said Eric. “So I can return his key.”

He showed me a simple ring with a single worn Yale key.

“Same as mine” said Eric. “No key, no bed.”

“But that wallet?” I asked.

“He found it. And will lose it.”

“He’s really your brother?”

Eric smiled. “Everyone is my brother.”
