I read an interview in a newspaper many years ago.

An author in the UK had written that year’s best-selling book, and had become very wealthy. They turned to their best friend, who had provided lots of advice over the years, and asked how best to invest their money. The friend suggested the author buy jewels, as they were most likely to retain their value.

Two things about the friend. They lived in America. And sadly they were very ill. The author would phone their friend several times a week and have long conversations the way friends do, often lasting an hour or more. This was in the days when calling America was costly.

During one call the friend said, “You really shouldn’t call me so often. Don’t get me wrong. I love to hear from you and really enjoy our chats. But all these calls must be costing you a fortune.”

The author replied “I’m only doing what you told me. You said to invest my money in precious stones, and your words are my diamonds.”

DIAMONDS

Alone, but not alone for long
I close my eyes, and hear your voice, so strong
My life, is not quiet anymore
My eyes can hear, since you came through my door

Is this the way of things when people are in love
Do words have new meanings since before
I treasure everything you are and love you all the more
Most of all your words are my diamonds

I am rich, I have wealth beyond compare
Not mere gold, but a jewel far more rare
You with me, you have made my choice
And my wealth, are the words of your voice

Is this the way of things when people are in love
Does love for money take a well-earned rest
No need for guilt-edged stocks and shares, I have no interest
Best of all your words are my diamonds

Minutes last for hours, the sands of time have slowed
Behind you the clouds perform their mime
No matter what the time of day you have a gift for me
There is no present like time

Your presence, you know only how to give
Now with you, I feel inspired to live
You say so much, though your words are few
I have found, Us begins with you

Is this the way of things when people are in love
Does love for money take a well-earned rest
No need for guilt-edged stocks and shares, I have no interest
Best of all your words are my diamonds

I treasure everything you are and love you all the more
Most of all your words are my diamonds
